Milos Kostic continued his amazing assault of the Masters
triathlon category by winning two World triathlon titles in
2011.
Milos won the 70-74 year old age group world half ironman
championship in Henderson, Nevada on September 11th and
followed that with a Ironman World Championship for the same
age group in Lailua-Kona, Hawaii, October 8th.
Along the way, Milos won his age group in every event he
entered including the Canadian Ironman Championships in
August.
An incredible achievement considering his bike accident in
2010.
MILOS KOSTIC: SASK
SPORT'S 2011 MASTERS ATHLETE OF THE YEAR
The Saskatchewan triathlon
community is celebrating again as Regina’s Milos Kostic has
been named Sask Sport’s Masters Athlete of the Year. Milos
came back from a significant cycling accident in 2010 to win
two Age Group World Championship Events in 2011, at the age
of 70. This is the second time he has won this award. Milos
previously received this honor in 2006.
The two most significant
feats of the 2011 season occurred less than a month apart.
September 11th, in Henderson, Nevada, Milos won for his age
group the Half-Ironman World Championship with a time of 5
hours, 42 minutes, 45 seconds. This time was a full 38
minutes faster than the next closest competitor in his age
group and set a age group course record. Then, on October
8th, he won the Ironman World Championship in Kona, Hawaii
with a time of 11 hours, 45 minutes and 5 seconds. This
result, continuing the trend, was an hour better than his
next closest competitor.
Overall, the entire 2011 season was one of great
accomplishment for Kostic. Milos celebrated his 70th
birthday in style winning his age group at the Boston
Marathon on April 18th, 2011. He finished with a time of 3
hours 17 minutes, 38 seconds. This was 12 seconds faster
than he ran in 2010. His time of 3:17:38 won the 70-74 year
old age group by almost 5 minutes. In Calgary on July 31st,
Milos had no competitors in his age group but still clocked
a fast time of 5:46:49 beating all entrants in the 65-69
year old age group and all but one in the 60-64 year Old age
group. This was an age group course record time.
In Penticton in August, Milos' results for the Subaru
Ironman are simply amazing. His time of 11 hours, 14
minutes, 24 seconds is a full 3 hours, 13 minutes faster
than his next closest competitor. He was an amazing 362nd
overall in this race of over 2000 triathletes (all ages
including professionals). His time in 2011 also destroyed
the old record for men in the 70 to 74 year old age group.
The previous record was 13:08:26. Milos also has the record
for fastest time Male 65-69 set in 2009. Milos also raced
locally in 2011. He won his age group at both our two big
events: the Craven Genki Pike Lake Triathlon (Provincials)
and Regina Beach Triathlon.
Milos had a disastrous accident during bike training in the
summer of 2010. On highway 11 in Lumsden, Kostic hit a deer
traveling at about 60 km/h. The crash forced Milos to cancel
the remainder of the 2010 season.Historically, this is only
the third time a triathlete has won a Sask Sport annual
award. As previously mentioned, Milos won the Masters
Athlete of the Year award in 2006 and Fiona Cribb won Female
Athlete of the Year in 1991.
